Academics

History

We will continue our ancient China unit by learning about silk and Chinese New Year. We will compare Japan, India, and China before having an assessment on ancient China on Thursday. We’ll end the unit with our China Celebration on Friday.

Science

We will learn how different types of insects walk and discuss the meanings of peristalsis and tri-pedal gait.

Literature

We will continue reading The Cricket in Times Square while practicing decoding new text and reading with expression. We will discuss the plot and will discover the literary technique of anthropomorphism. Please send in a copy of this book for your child as soon as possible, if you haven’t already.

Grammar

We will continue practicing the use of commas in a series during our narration, copywork, and dictation exercises. We will use passages from Pippi Longstocking for these lessons.

Math

Scholars will continue our unit on measurement. We will practice measuring meters and centimeters and solve problems using those measurements.

Recess

Recess is an important time for students to develop social skills. Please help us remind students to choose safe and friendly games on the playground. Touch-free games like soccer or freeze tag are best. This is a great opportunity to show virtue!

Math
Students will review subtracting with renaming. Please see email for a parent newsletter explaining addition and subtraction in Singapore math terms for your reference. We will then review all concepts we have covered thus far in unit 1-2 including place value, addition, and subtraction. Friday, we will begin our next unit on measurement. Students will practice measuring objects with nonstandard units of measurement such as paper clips.


Science
We have begun our unit on insects. Students will learn how insects see, feel, taste, hear, and touch the world around them. They will then have an opportunity to observe insects up close using a hand lens.

Grammar
Students will learn how to use a comma in a list and write based on passages from Ginger Pye.

History
Students are learning about ancient China. They will learn about the land, the capital city of Beijing, Confucius, the Great Wall, and important inventions from China. We will celebrate this unit on Friday, November 5th. 

Literature
We will begin reading The Cricket in Times Squareplease ensure you child has a copy on Monday. Students will review the terms-setting and characters. They will also compare and contrast a cricket's sound to classical music. Don't forget to sign up for reading groups, thank you!

Second Grade Newsletter 10.8.21

Hello Parents and Guardians! We love having our scholars in class! They have grown so much already, and we are excited to continue to open these great minds! Thank you for sharing your children with us and thank you for all the work and dedication you put forth.

Important Dates:

· Fall Break: October 11th-15th

· Mandatory Parent Teacher Conferences: October 18th and 19th

· Students Return October 20th – Early Release, New Clubs start

 

Parent Teacher Conferences: We are so excited to share your scholar's progress! Parent Teacher Conferences are mandatory, and they are offered on October 18th and 19th. Please see an email from your homeroom teacher with the link to signup or visit the Archway Chandler website.

China Celebration: To enrich our curriculum and allow learning to come alive, we will have a China celebration! The students will discover Chinese food, create a craft, and unravel a silkworm’s cocoon. Look for a sign up soon for items. This event will be Friday, November 5th.

Academics:

History: When we return, we will begin our unit on China! Students will learn about the geography of the land, the Great Wall, and Chinese inventions. 

Science: In science, we will begin our unit on insects by learning how insects use their different senses. 

Literature: We will continue our study of fairy tales and enjoy the story of The Little Mermaid. Students will practice identifying details and main idea. Please don’t forget to bring in your copy of The Cricket in Times Square. 

Grammar: We will further our learning on the four different types of sentences and end marks. We will continue with copy work and dictation by reading excepts from 101 Dalmatians

Math: Students have worked hard on renaming ten and hundreds to 1,000. After break, we will begin working on renaming tens and hundreds to subtract within 1,000.

Hello Parents and Guardians!

We had a fabulous time on our field trip today! We learned about instruments from several Asian countries, had a fun drum circle experience, and enjoyed some recess time at a nearby playground. Ask your child about “Strawberry”, “Chocolate Chip”, and “Vanilla” drumming!

If your student’s costume request has been approved, they may wear their costume to school. We recommend shoes that are safe for recess. We will have some instructional time, as usual, but will also listen to each student speak about the character they chose. Volunteer Opportunities 

(To volunteer, you must be approved through the volunteer process- Raptor application)

· Reading Group Volunteers: There are still openings for reading group leaders. Each shift needs four volunteers on Tuesdays and some Thursdays. Please see the link on the side bar to sign up.

· At-Home Projects: If anyone is interested in doing projects at home (folding, cutting, gluing, or assembly) please let us know. We need to prepare a science booklet this week.

 

Academics

History 

We will continue to explore the civilization of Ancient India, and students will end the unit by completing a Diwali craft on Friday.

Science 

This week students will create clouds in a vase and simulate precipitation to predict what will happen as the water reaches the ground. We will review the water cycle of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation before taking a short quiz.

Literature 

Students will focus on fluency, including stopping at end marks, pausing at commas, and using pitch to emphasize questions and express emotion. We will read and discuss The Emperor’s New Clothes and Beauty and the Beast. Please send in your student’s copy of The Cricket in Times Square when they return from Fall Break. 

Grammar 

Students will review and then the be tested on the following Grammar elements: Nouns, Action Verbs, Linking Verbs, and Helping Verbs. 

Math 

We will practice adding more than two numbers, and have an assessment on addition with renaming. “Ten Ones, I hereby declare you – One Ten!”

Spalding 

This week students will have Spalding homework on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday only.
