Field Trip:

The second grade students will be going on their first Field Trip on Friday, October 1st to The Musical Instrument Museum! Please follow the link to sign your child up  if you have not already.

This link acts as your permission form. Without it, your child cannot attend the Field Trip.

Here are some important details for the field trip:

We will be leaving school at 8:30am, spending most of the school day at the museum, and arriving back at school around 2:30pm.

Items to label with name in black marker:

  • Lunch will be eaten at Desert Horizon Park, and we ask that you pack an easy-to-eat lunch for your child (lunches will be in a cooler).  Please, put your child’s lunch in a brown paper bag with his/her name written on it in black marker.

  • Large disposable water bottles are ideal, as it is a long day. His or her water bottle for the day should also be disposable with his/her name written on the top.

  • We would like each child to bring a snack with his/her name written on it as well, because the ride to the museum is lengthy.

  • Please make sure all food/drink items are disposable, as we do not want the students to lose any of their belongings at the museum.

There will be no vending machines or gift shop stops while at the museum, so children will not be able to buy their lunches or snacks.

Please let your homeroom teacher know if you can donate a cooler and ice!

You may send a hat and sunglasses with your child since we will be eating and playing outside after the museum, and please apply sunscreen before dropping your child off at school. The students are still expected to wear their uniform, as they are representing our school.

We are very excited for our field trip, and we know it will be a wonderful experience for everyone.

Reading Bags:

Reading aloud for 20 minutes each night is a crucial piece of your child's education. Your signature in your child's agenda is your written indication that he/she completed his/her 20 minutes of nightly read and retell homework. Your child will turn his/her reading bag in on his/her assigned day. Please contact your teacher if you are in need of the information. Feel free to ask about reading choices should you have questions once you receive your child's book(s) each week!

Rocket Math:
Please support your scholar by practicing Rocket Math at home. It should only take 2 minutes! Your child's graded Rocket Math test is in his/her yellow folder every day except Wednesday. Please have your child go around the outside of the test (the orbit) and give you the answers to each equation as you look at the key. That's it! Happy sprinting!

Conversation Prompts:
How many ones are in one ten?
What happened at the end of Sarah Plain and Tall?
Which important holiday do Hindus celebrate with candles and cleaning? (Diwali, the festival of lights)
Is there more water or land on planet Earth?

History
This week we learned about ancient India and the Indus River civilization. Students learned that there is still much mystery that surrounds these ancient people, though we do know much about their religion since it exists today. This past week, we learned about Hinduism and next week we will learn the story of Prince Siddhartha and Buddhism.

Science
Students showed a clear understanding of the earth cycles that we have studied. Next, we will begin studying the water cycle and learn about water in its various forms-solid, liquid, and gas (water vapor). Students will also learn about evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.

Literature
We have completed our read of Sarah, Plain, and Tall. Next, we will enjoy Indian folktales and fairy tales. After, fall break, please send your scholar with a copy of The Cricket in Times Square, ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0312380038. Please note that this was not on the original list of classics for second grade in error. Thank you for purchasing and sending in and sorry for the inconvenience.

Grammar
Next week, we will delve into the poem, "Something Told the Wild Geese" and begin memorizing it for recitation during Classical Character Day on Friday, October 8th. Students will also continue identifying action, linking, and state of being verbs before learning about the last type-helping verbs. Our writing this week will be based on passages from The Pilgrim's Progress.

Math
Ten ones I hereby rename you one ten! This week, students worked on renaming addition into the tens after they demonstrated mastery over addition and subtraction without renaming. Please practice renaming with your child at home! This proves to be a challenging math concept for many 2nd graders. Remind your scholar that ten ones equals 1 ten, and ten tens equals 100! Next week we will begin addition into the hundreds with renaming.
