Second Grade Newsletter 12.3.21


Hello Parents! 

News: 
We welcomed Mr. Albert, insect enthusiast, this week and heard about his adventures traveling the world and capturing rare insects. Please ask your child to tell you more about what they observed and learned during the presentation.
 
The Winter Concert is quickly approaching. Each grade level will perform in separate time slots. The 2nd grade concert begins at 5:30pm in the CPA gym. Students should arrive at their 2nd grade homerooms at 5:15pm. Please be mindful of any physical symptoms your student may have and be sure to keep them home if they have a fever or other symptoms of concern.

History 
We learned about the Persian Wars and ancient Olympics this past week. Up next, we will learn about the Great Thinkers and Alexander the Great. Friday will be our Ancient Greece Celebration. Please see below for the signup.

Science 
Students will learn about helpful and harmful insect this week. They will also complete a short written assignment about an insect as well as draw a picture of it in art class. They will present this work after winter break.

Literature 
The children have been enjoying the various Greek myths that we have been reading in class. This week, we will learn more about the famous Greek heroes such as Bellerophon, Hercules, Oedipus, and Theseus. We will also read the tale of King Midas and the Golden Touch, as students practice the skill of visualization.

Grammar 
Students are working on memorizing "Bed in Summer" by Robert Louis Stevenson. They will recite the poem in its entirety the week of December 13th. In grammar, students are learning about adjectives and how they describe nouns and pronouns. In writing class, we will write based on passages from the story, "The Young Man and the Cat." Students will also learn how to write a nonfiction paragraph on the topic of solitary and social insects.

Math 
This week students will learn more about how multiplication and division are related. They will then take an assessment over division. After that we will review all concepts learned thus far as students continue to build their knowledge of mathematics.
