Second Grade Newsletter
8.20.21
Hello
Parents!
News:
It was wonderful to see so many of you at our Curriculum Night this week. If
you were not able to attend, please reach out to us with any questions you
may have about our classrooms.
Please remember to empty your child’s Friday Folder (celebrate your child's
hard work!), and sign and return it on Monday. Sign the bottom of the agenda
and return it as well.
Please send The Boxcar Children on Monday if you have not done
so already. Please note that the classic, The Cricket in Times Square
was incorrectly missed on our book list. If possible, please purchase the
book by George Selden (IBSN: 978-0-312-38003-8) for your child
to use in November. Thank you and we apologize for this inconvenience.
Please send a silent reading book that your scholar can keep at school.
If you are having trouble ordering supplies or have any questions, please contact your teacher.

Conversation Starters:
How are chicken eggs and frog eggs different?
How many tens are in the number 79? How do you write 79 in word form?
How is a peninsula different from an island?
Tell me 3 words that use the phonogram ow.
Studies:
Poetry:
You will find our first poem The Year by Sara Coleridge in your
child's yellow folder. Recitation of the first 8 couplets (January through
August) will take place on Monday, August 23rd. We recommend practicing 5
minutes per night.
Grammar:
This week in Writing with Ease (WWE), students listened to a reading from Misty
of Chincoteague. They continued to work on creating summaries, copy work,
and writing sentences from dictation. These exercises use reading
comprehension, grammar, punctuation, spelling and handwriting skills. Students
also reviewed types of nouns.
Math:
Students will begin working on Numbers to 1000. They will continue practicing
writing numbers in word form, work with manipulatives, and create a foldable.
We will end the week with greater than/less than comparisons.
History:
This week, students studied land forms (and created them out of clay!), our
location in the world, and important United States landmarks. We have
our first assessment on continents
and oceans on Monday, August 23rd. You will find a map labeled
with the continents and oceans in your child's yellow folder. Please review
these at your convenience in preparation for the quiz.
Spalding:
We will begin dictating words this week. Please dictate each
word to your child for homework, and have them write the words an additional
two times if they made any errors.
Literature:
Students are enjoying The Boxcar Children! We have been working on character
analysis and settings. Ask your child to name the boxcar children from oldest
to youngest. We will read, discuss, and act out chapters 5-9 of the classic,
The Boxcar Children.
The four children-Henry,
Jessie, Violet, and Benny settle into their new home, the boxcar. They discover
"treasure" at a nearby dump while Henry finds work at Dr. Moore's
house. One night, the children hear a noise in woods. What could it be?
Dr. Moore begins to wonder
about Henry. One evening, while reading the local paper he comes across a
notice posted by a wealthy gentleman, Mr. Alden for his four missing
grandchildren. Will Dr. Moore tell Mr.
Alden about his grandchildren?
Science:
This week we continued studying the development of chicken embryos, and then
moved on to learn about the life cycle of frogs. The students seem to be
captivated by the development of these living things.
We hope you and your family enjoy a terrific weekend. Please feel free to
reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
